Breaking Down the Mindset of a Cheeser
Recently I was thinking why our community is so divided on what’s acceptable game play. A majority of the crowd loves to play football. The rest of the crowd loves to win. Why is it then, that our video game series, Madden, separate from other video games? When I was debating this I thought, “why isn’t Halo a divided community?” “Why aren’t there guys out there saying certain tactics are cheap, and dirty?” “How come there’s such a massive following of Halo, and our community is essentially split in half?” To find my answer, I started comparing the games.
In short, the reason why our community is split and a game franchise like Halo’s isn’t, is because there isn’t anything to compare a video game like Halo to. In our game of choice, Madden simulates football. When we put Madden in the console, for most gamers, we want to play football the way we see it on TV — or in our heads — better than the way we see it on TV. We want to be the coach calling the plays, and running in the touchdowns. The catch is, that we want to do it in a fashion similar to what’s on TV.
So how do the Halo guys get a break? We can’t compare Halo to anything else. How can you compare shooter games to anything short of war? Even with that comparison, is there any such thing as ‘dirty tactics’ in war? These guys are playing a video game that’s like nothing else we know. There can’t be ethics, or morality in shooting the opponent dead. That’s what you play the game for.
Our controversy stems from just that. What do you play the game for? The Madden community is divided between gamers who are playing football, and gamers that are playing a video game. In Halo, T Squared is the poster boy. Does he double shoot, and jump onto things he shouldn’t for an advantage? Of course he does — and the masses love him for doing it so well. Would he abuse curl routes, or HB off tackles in Madden? Absolutely, and the masses would hate him for it. The division, although clear, is often over looked. He’s playing a video game, despite what disk is in the tray. He’s playing to win, and the only difference is that we compare Madden to the NFL when we should be considering it a video game. Madden is our version of war. We’re playing a video game to win, not to simulate the NFL much in the same way that T Squared is playing to win in Halo — only we can’t compare Halo to anything else. For this reason alone the Halo community is enormous, and ours is split.
Once you stop looking at Madden as football and start looking at it as a video game, you’re going to find yourself in a much better situation to win tournaments and challenges. Once you do that, everyone considers you a ‘cheezer.’

gotta say you really make sense for comparing two games that really have nothing to do which each other. im one of the few madden players whos not sure where i stand on the gameplay issue i love playing a straitup football game where its just like the nfl but on the other hand ill do anything short of cheating/glitching to win. the way i try to look at it is every defense has some hole in it and every offensive play can somehow be stopped its just a matter of reading the formations and plays and trying to be a good playcaller. So really there is no cheap play unless you do some sort of glitch and pretty much the majority of the madden community is against glitching so thats not a real problem. good article it really got me thinking and i think another problem with madden is our huge following is in my opinion slightly too big that we have way too many people that play madden that dont care about the integrity of the game way too many people with 3-38 records with 92% dnf’s i think that hurts us. you dont here people in Halo or Call of Duty complain about people being really bad or quitting while madden is direct competition its 1v1 and if you get a real player playing someone whos a joke and is going to quit as soon as it gets to be 14-0 it creates friction within the community where were mad at the people who dont take the game seriously and then we get mad at the players with alot of success running one play over and over that you cant figure out how to stop and all that means is you gotta hit the lab and see what works. i personally run a whole offense of about 10 dif methodical plays but i run them so well it works for me and about half the people i play get pist and i say learn to stop me and they tell me i wouldnt win if i used the whole playbook and i tell them their completely right but i dont need those other plays so i dont use them. All in all madden is always going to be a community filled with clicks and groups of people who all feel different about the game. Luckily theirs a website like this for the people who care about the game and want to be as competitive as they can be. hope i brought up some good points and got some people thinkin
Well here’s my take on this subject. I personally don’t think it has anything to do with a person playing to win. I think it has to do with a persons personal up bringing and if they have morals or not. Because at the end of the day no one forces any of us to do anything at all. Every move we make we did it on our own. So when people do things that they know are going to give them an unfair advantage over their opponent it’s a moral issue. You can offen find these people saying things like it’s in the game so try to stop it. Well last time I checked blocking field goals was the object of lining up against the offense to prevent them from scoring but theres a rule that says you can’t do that. Because the people who do the real glitches get mad when you take a point away from them after they do what was in the game on you to score in the first place. Makes you think don’t it???. If it wasn’t realistic to get a field goal blocked why even kick one just give the extra point and not waste time. I think people pick and chose which glitch is okay with them once they learn how to do them then they do it so much that they tell them selves it’s okay or they find a group of people that do it also then they all say it’s okay. What makes it funny is these people do these things and then say they are better then the people they beat when on every other play they do they get shut down which is the reason these glitchy plays come about. I want everyone who is doing these plays and you know who you are because you have been told your doing it a million times by now. Ask yourself why is it that I only do these plays when I am on fourth down,in a close game or in position to lose??? if you can answer that question honestly maybe you will stop doing it or at least not do it to people that aren’t doing it to you. At the very least if you have Morals you wouldn’t do these plays against people that don’t do them to you.
This was officially my first Post hopefully it opened some eyes and gave somethign to think about. Give feedback if you wish I am open.
God Bless you all!!!
