Split Back Advantage

689featuredhook

Playbooks: many
Play:  Shot Gun Split Back, Split Offset 689 hook

Setup:
1) Hotroute left outside WR on a slant to the right
2) Motion left outside WR to the right, he will set
3) Fade left HB out of the backfield
4) Smart route slot WR

Reads
1) Right HB hitting angle flat route
2) Crossing routes
3) Fade out the backfield
4) Angle rocket streak

KStarr’s Thoughts:

Here’s our first of two setups.  In this setup we have a play that combines dots with a rocket catch opportunity.  Out of 2 back most people like to send pressure, so our reads must be quick, and right.  The most popular pressure this year comes from the A-gap, with that said we make sure to implement crossing routes with quick dots out the backfield to counter the pressure.  A good defensive player will mix up heat with the same look as coverage.  Anticipating that, we have the abundance of crossing routes over the middle of the field and last but not least the crooked streak rocket opportunity on the right side of the field that Ask Madden had given you a heads up a few weeks prior to.  The crooked streak is a very easy rocket where you wait about 20-30 yards before throwing so naturally it’s our last read after we’ve gone through all the progessions.

Steps 2:
1) Hotroute right outside wr on a slant in
2) Hotroute left outside wr on a slant in
3) Hotroute fade out the backfield left RB
4) Motion right outside WR till right before he sets next to the slot WR,
and hike to give him running start

Reads 2:
1) Right HB hitting angle flat route
2) Fade left HB out of the backfield
3) Crossing routes
4) Deep Crossing Route

KStarr’s Thoughts:
This play is great because it can literally be ran against any defense in the game.  Most people like to blitz the two back formation, this play alone will kill a blitz with all the dot opportunities.

Why both these set ups work:

What makes this play so effective is the motion tactic we used here to give our WR (right outside) so that he can run free in the secondary.  When you combine a tactic like that with a play that has so many dot opportunites such as this one, it makes every single WR and route accountable.  It can beat quick heat, and it can also beat coverage D with overload of crossing routes over the middle of the field, along with the quick reads to our RBs.
